LVC girls soccer goes to OT shootout
Easton and Parkland played 80 minutes of soccer in regulation and another 30 minutes of soccer in two overtimes without a ball going into the net.
After the two overtimes, the rules call for penalty kicks to decide the winner and Easton took a slim 5-4 advantage in the penalty kicks to win the Lehigh Valley Conference Championship, the first in the school's history.
Their 110 minutes of play showed the two teams to be very close in talent, with Parkland outshooting Easton 16-13 and taking a 7-5 advantage in corner kicks.
"I told the girls before we went to the kicks that someone's got to win," said Parkland coach Al Haddad. "They didn't beat us and we didn't beat them, but it's going to end, so let's do our best and keep our heads up no matter what. It's unfortunate that it does end this way, but in all honesty, Easton deserved it. I'm really happy for Easton, they did a great job and Timmy's [Easton coach Tim Hall] a great guy and it's good to lose one to a team that outplayed us."
Parkland rotated goal keepers Becky Webster and Regan Allsop as it did during the regular season and both turned in a superb performance.
"We have two outstanding goalkeepers, one's a junior and one's a sophomore and we've got to have our sophomore girl prepared in case we need her to go in there, so we've been platooning all year and I didn't see a reason to stop now," said Haddad. "They've never let me down and they're both really great goalkeepers."
In the end, it came down to Easton goalkeeper Giana Solomon, who didn't play during regulation or during the overtime periods, but took over for Erin Anagnost in the penalty kick phase, making a key save.
Solomon blocked a kick from Morgan Warmisky with her hands only to have it bounce straight up, off the crossbar and come right back down to her for the save.
Easton's Megan Grundhauser nailed the final penalty kick for Easton that gave the Rovers the victory.
"They're physical and we're young and small and I think they just wore us down a little bit, especially in that second half," said Haddad.
"They completely got us out of our game. When we got the ball, we were just kicking it and that's not good."
The Lady Trojans now enter the District 11 playoffs and will host Nazareth Thursday in a quarterfinal match.
The two teams played each other in two very tight games this season, with an early September meeting ending in a 0-0 tie before Parkland picked up a 1-0 win over the Blue Eagles when the two teams met at Parkland High School three weeks ago.
