Hellertown Borough Council unanimously approved a library consolidation plan presented by representatives of the Hellertown Area and Lower Saucon Township libraries Oct. 7.

According to Hellertown Area Library Director Robin Rotherham, changes will occur in the event Lower Saucon Township council decides to terminate its contract with the Bethlehem Area Public Library (BAPL), such as the discontinuation of the BAPL Bookmobile service.

Rotherham said the Hellertown Area Library will see a minor structural expansion along with an interior redesign to accommodate a larger library population.

Additionally, parking will be added along with various programs for adults and children. Rotherham noted the hiring of additional staff.

Rotherham said the consolidation will benefit students who attend the Saucon Valley School District as they will be located closer to the library.

Lower Saucon Township Manager Jack Cahalan said the consolidation plan is worth pursuing for the benefit of Hellertown and township residents.

Councilwoman Gail Nolf expressed her support of the plan adding it will benefit both communities. Nolf noted the borough may still use the BAPL.

"There's no additional cost to us," Nolf said. "It's a win for us."

The consolidation plan must be approved by the Lower Saucon Township Council and the Hellertown Area Library Board of Trustees before it is implemented.
