Girls volleyball earns fourth straight league gold

For the seniors on the Parkland volleyball team, their high school career has involved nothing but winning. The Lady Trojans grabbed their fourth straight Lehigh Valley Conference Championship with a 3-1 win over Emmaus. The one lost game was the only set that Parkland has lost since the start of the season.

The Hornets came out swinging, but got no closer than 7-4 in the first set. From there, Parkland won four straight points to take a commanding lead.

The two teams battled back and forth, but Parkland eventually took control of the game and disposed of the Lady Hornets 25-18.

Game number two saw the two teams tied six times, but again Parkland would always rally to pull ahead and with the set tied 24-24, Parkland would won the next two volleys to take the game and a commanding 2-0 lead.

"We talked about that [the possibility of losing a game] and realized that there's going to be a time when we might drop one," Parkland head coach Mike Krause said. "When we dropped that [game], there was no disappointment and we came back out fresh and I'm really proud of how we handled it mentally."

The Hornets looked to turn the tables in the third game and played much cleaner, with fewer unforced errors and turned a 7-4 deficit into a 12-7 lead. Parkland continued to fight back, but Emmaus again went on a late run and was able to do what no other team did this season by winning a game from the Trojans by a 25-21 score.

Emmaus hoped to build on the momentum it built in the game, but that first loss woke up the Lady Trojans, who showed no mercy in the fourth game and didn't even allow Emmaus to work their way into a tie. Parkland won the final game 25-14, sealing their fourth straight title.

"We knew it would be a tough match and that third [game], we knew it was a lot because we made too many mistakes, so we just got together, worked it out and put it away," said senior Allora Atiyeh.

Siena Salvaggio had 10 kills and a block for Parkland, while Kristen Krause collected four aces and 22 assists in the match. Head coach Krause believes that this year's team may be even better than the last two teams that played for the PIAA Championship in each of the past two seasons, winning one title.

"This team's more versatile," said Mike Krause. "We specialize a little more and it's a very unselfish group. They cheer for each other and with that, comes a balance."
