Girls must wait until Saturday

Northampton's "second season" begins Saturday in field hockey.

Coach Kelly Backenstoe's Konkrete Kids drew the No. 3 seed in the District 11 PIAA Class 3A tournament but will have to wait until Saturday to play.

The Konkrete Kids (12-5-1 in the regular season) are seeded third behind Mountain Valley Conference titlist Stroudsburg and in front of fourth-seeded Parkland of LVC.

The Kids, who are 12-6-1 overall, will face off against either Liberty or Easton at home Saturday.

Liberty, seeded sixth, took on 11th-seeded Easton Wednesday in a District 11 pigtail round game, which came after Press deadlines.

The Kids lost to Liberty 2-1 on penalties during the regular season but shut out Easton 3-0 in their final regular season game last Thursday, and showed they could bounce back after losing to Emmaus in the LVC semifinals.

Megan Wiest, Bri Dalton and Makenna Marhefka scored against PME and join Kate Fehnel as LVC all-star teammates.

Wiest, a junior with 14 goals and seven assists, and Fehnel, a senior co-captain with 10 goals and 11 assists, were named to the first team, while senior co-captain Bri Dalton (two goals, three assists) and junior Marhefka (five goals, two assists) were honorable mention.

"It's a great honor to have four of our starters as all-conference," said Backenstoe this week. "It shows that other LVC teams appreciate how good our girls are."

Besides those four girls, Backenstoe has a lot of fire power and defensive powers from the other starters, which include Taylor Kerbacher (7 and 7), Rachel Heimbach (12 and 4), Autumn Klucsarits, Victoria Pizzoferrato, Amber Saylor, Katey Minnich, and goalie Shannon Dalton. Other girls who see plenty of action are Madison Gogal, Shannon Knipe, Ashley Schell, Hannah Marth, and Ashley Kunsman (backup goalie).

"We're looking forward to districts," said Backenstoe. "We'll have a full week of practice including a scrimmage with Northern Lehigh (a District 11 2A qualifier) and we'll try to keep things competitive. It's like a preseason schedule for the playoffs. It'll be a big challenge and I know the girls will be ready Saturday against whichever team we face."
