Hawks play waiting game in district volleyball

As most sports know their playoff fates this week, girls volleyball still is up in the air.

As of press time Tuesday morning, the 3A and 2A playoff brackets in volleyball were undetermined because of regular season matches still being played Monday and Tuesday nights.

With Liberty and Freedom both out of the postseason, that leaves Bethlehem Catholic (12-6) as the only local team competing in the postseason.

The Hawks won the district title last year and are looking to repeat for the first time since winning back-to-back titles in 2007-08.

Where the Hawks will be seeded is the biggest question at the moment, as Central Catholic (12-4), Blue Mountain (13-3) and Notre Dame-GP (12-4) sit in the top three spots. Central and Blue Mountain appear to be locked as one and two respectively, but Notre Dame's position can fluctuate depending on their results from Monday and Tuesday's action.

Notre Dame took on Warren Hills (NJ) on Monday and North Hunterdon (NJ) yesterday to delay the district brackets. The official brackets weren't released by Press deadline on Tuesday morning, but it appeared the Hawks would likely be staying in the fourth seed and hosting Lehighton Thursday afternoon.

Becahi head coach Paul Abi-Daher wasn't sure where his team would end up standing early in the week, but was hoping that the Hawks would jump Notre Dame in the final point accumulation.

"I think we get some type of bonus points at the end of the year because of the 3A teams we've scheduled," Abi-Daher said. "I'm not really sure though. It's going to be close for that third spot."

The difference between the third and the fourth seed can mean the difference between playing in the district final, since the fourth seed would be lumped in with Central Catholic's side of the bracket.

The Hawks lost to Central in four games earlier this year and Abi-Daher knows that avoiding the Vikettes for as long as possible would be beneficial to his group.

However, he also understands that you have to beat the best in order to be the best.

"Eventually you're going to have to play Central," he said. "We've challenged the girls since we lost in the LVC playoffs to focus. The team that wants to win the most is going to come away with the title."
