In order to keep kids safe while they are out and about, here are some helpful tips, to keep in mind from The Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
Avoid trick-or-treating alone and always walk in groups or with a trusted adult. Holding a flashlight will aid to easily find your way and to increase your visibility.
The CDC notes children are four times more likely to be hit by cars Oct. 31, than on any other day of the year.
Always walk, not run from house to house. Look both ways before crossing the street and use crosswalks wherever possible. Walk on sidewalks, or on the far edge of the road facing traffic. Don't' stop at a house with dim or no lighting and only enter if you're with a trusted adult.
Wear well-fitting masks, costumes, and shoes to avoid blocked vision. This will prevent you from tripping. Swords, knives, and other costume accessories should be short, soft, and flexible. Fasten reflective tape to costumes and bags to help drivers see you. Always test face make-up on a small spot on your skin, before using a complete application. Remove make-up or face paint before bedtime to prevent the possibility of skin and eye irritation.
Examine treats for choking hazards and for potential tampering before eating them. Eat only factory-wrapped food products. Avoid eating all homemade treats made by strangers.
Remind children unaccompanied by an adult, to never accept rides from strangers.
