Peng, Pham repeat at district doubles
Been there. Done that.
For Parkland's Jenna Peng and TuQuyen Pham, the District 11 Class AAA Doubles Tennis championship match has become a regularly scheduled event.
The Trojan seniors should just mark the date of the finals on their personal calendars.
On Monday at the West End Racquet, Swim and Fitness Club, Peng and Pham made their third straight appearance in the title match and won their second straight championship.
The latest victim of Parkland's powerful duo were Freedom's Kaleigh DiNoto and Flannery Johnston, who dropped a 6-4, 6-2 decision.
"I thought the difference was our experience and our play at the net," said Parkland coach George Grim. "This is the third straight year that Jenna and TuQuyen played together in the district doubles tournament and the fourth straight year that Jenna has played in the doubles final.
"I thought our comfort level and familiarity with a championship match was a big advantage. Freedom looked a little nervous and we jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first set."
Although Freedom made a run to close to within 5-4, Peng held serve and gave the Trojans the opening set.
"I think the experience factor was one of those unsaid things that we knew could help us," said Peng. "To get off to a good start like we did in the first set was huge."
While a quick start was the key in the first set, a strong finish paved the way in the second set. After falling behind 2-1, Parkland won five straight games to close out the match.
"Jenna and I have been playing tennis together since the second grade," said Pham. "We are really comfortable with each other on the court which is so important in doubles. I think we are playing better as a team right now than in any of the previous seasons."
With the win, Peng and Pham improved their district doubles record to 14-1 over the past three seasons and also advanced to their second straight PIAA State Tournament.
"I'm really excited to be going back to states," said Peng. "This is our senior year, so we want to make it memorable."
Pham added, "It feels great to defend our district title and get back to states.
"Now we have to make the most of it. Last year, we won our first match, but then lost in the quarterfinals. We would love to improve on that performance this year."
The PIAA state doubles championships are in Hershey in November.
