Fire station to get addition
The Borough of Northampton held a groundbreaking ceremony Saturday for an addition to its central fire station on Lerchenmiller Drive.
As the bright sun glistened on the gold painted shovels, applause broke out as officials scooped up the loose, brown earth.
The addition, 40 feet in width, will include two truck bays and a modern training room for volunteers and staff with a capacity of 50 people. Borough council is expected to award a contract for the addition when it meets this evening.
Fire Chief Robert Solderich said construction could begin in several weeks with completion expected in the spring.
"On behalf of the residents and the borough, I thank you guys," council President John Yurish said. He encouraged the public to visit the fire station and tour the facility.
"I've never seen a more dedicated bunch of guys," said Mayor Thomas Reenock.
The new addition will be erected without an increase in property taxes.
State Rep.Julie Harhart (R-183rd) said firefighters are ready and willing to respond at a moment's notice.
"You are charged with protecting lives every day," she said.
Borough Manager Gene Zarayko, serving as master of ceremonies, said the borough is fortunate to have a committed and well-trained group of men and women.
Solderich said the fire department has a mix of younger volunteers and experienced personnel. The senior members have 1,500 years of combined experience.
The Rev. Francis Straka, pastor of Blessed Virgin Mary Church, gave the invocation and benediction.
The borough fire company dates back to 1902 when the Siegfried Volunteer Fire Company No. 1 was recognized by council. Over the years, three separate fire companies existed, including the First Ward, Central and Alliance.
On Jan. 1, 1996, the three fire companies merged and began operating out of a new station on Lerchenmiller Drive.
