Field hockey tops Liberty

The Parkland field hockey team is headed to the Lehigh Valley Conference title game.

The Trojans beat Liberty 2-1 Tuesday in an LVC semifinal game.

"We have some players injured and some young players in key positions," said Parkland head coach Michelle Steele. "This is a testament to our upperclassmen for keeping us together as a team. Our game plan is to work together as a team."

Parkland took its lead in the first half on a Christina Slivinski goal off a corner play with 13:51 remaining.

The Trojans quickly made it 2-0 when sophomore Rachel Rizzetto scored off an assist from junior Brooke Sherwin with 12:49 left in the first half.

Liberty got right back in the game when Kali Shumoch scored with 12:21 left in the half.

Parkland had a few opportunities throughout the second half, but couldn't get anything past the Liberty keeper.

The Hurricanes took control over the final two minutes, but a relentless Parkland defense and solid goal keeping by Sydney Cope preserved the win.

"We worked together as a team," said Slivinski, one of Parkland's five seniors.

Parkland graduated seven seniors from last year's team. The Trojans have four freshmen on the roster and two in the starting line up.

The Trojans went 12-6 in the regular season, inlcuding a 10-4 record in the LVC, where they played in a difficult North Division.

They move on to Thursday's league title game to face Emmaus, which beat Northampton 9-1 in the semifinal.
