More than 250 people helped the St. Peter and Paul Roman Catholic Sick and Beneficial Society celebrate its 100th birthday.
The celebration began with a Mass of Thanksgiving at Queenship of Mary Church, formerly Our Lady of Hungary. The Rev. Francis P. Straka served as the celebrant and retired pastor Rev. Edwin V. Schwartz was co-celebrant. Following presentations and remarks by officials, participants enjoyed a home-styled catered all-you-can-eat dinner.
The Koprive Band, based in Szentpeterfa, Hungary, provided music.
Mayor Thomas Reenock presented club President Andrew Filipovits with a citation and keys to the borough. He also proclaimed Saturday as an official Hungarian Hall Day in the borough. This will be officially recorded in the borough's history.
Filipovits said he told his wife, Geraldine "Jerry," years ago of his interest in the club.
His wife told him to "Give it all you got, see what you come up with." Jerry later become the club's president, a post he held for 37 years.
John "Screppy" Filipovits was honored for more than 50 years of "dedicated service" as vice president and coordinator of special events. Heidi Skrapits, who has served as secretary/treasurer for more than three decades, was also recognized.
