Girls clinch district berth

Catasauqua's field hockey program took a collective sigh when they clinched their second consecutive District 11 Class 2A playoff berth.

Now, the Roughies hope they can enter the postseason with some momentum. In order to gain their ticket to the playoffs, Catty recently shutout Bangor, 1-0, and also downed Palmerton, 5-1.

"It does feel nice to finally get it done," said head coach Carrie Saul, who has guided the team to two berths in her first two years at the helm of the program. "We had a good few weeks, but we want to win our final two games.

"We're trying to get the highest seed possible and should have a shot at the (Colonial) league playoffs."

Catasauqua, which began the week with an overall 9-5-1 mark, had a meeting with North Division leader Northern Lehigh Tuesday before they concluded their regular season with Northwestern Thursday.

They entered the final week in a battle with Saucon Valley for the likely fourth spot in the league playoffs.

Saul believes her club can make an impact to a strong sense of team cohesiveness.

"These girls really appear to be jelling well," she said. "We really have a good mesh of younger and older players who have blended together well. I came into the season with high expectations and the girls adapted very well to our philosophy.

"We have some good senior leadership and some underclassmen who have been steady contributors."

Senior Janae Matos has been a mainstay in the nets for the Roughies all season as she has registered seven shutouts. Fellow seniors Katie Buczynski and Michaela Waldrop also have provided leadership throughout the season.

Sophomore Hannah Edwards and Quinn Bachman has been the team's leading scorers throughout the season. Edwards had a team-high 12 goals and 18 assist for 30 points and Bachman had 13 goals and two assists for 15 points to begin the week.

The Roughies have already scored 39 goals, topping their season-high mark of 31 last season.

"Janae (Matos) is always a very positive person and she gets everyone fired up," said Saul. "She (Matos) has been a good leader on and off the field for us. Katie (Buczynski) and Michaela Waldrop have been in the program and they know what to do as well.

"Quinn (Bachman) and Hannah (Edwards) just continue to improve their game throughout the season."

With apparently the right combinations on all fronts, the Roughies could have plenty to smile about instead of any sighs ahead.
