Gilmartin makes history for CHS
Last season, Catasauqua's Michael Gilmartin shot a 93 in the district golf qualifying round and missed the cut by a mere stroke.
A year later, Gilmartin once again shot a 93 in the 2013 District 11 Qualifying Round. This time, however, Gilmartin's score was good enough to earn a spot in the District Golf Championships at Blue Ridge Country Club, while making school history along the way.
Gilmartin finished in a tie for 15th place with a score of 92, just nine strokes behind sixth place finisher and final regional-qualifier Tim Wolak of Moravian Academy. Northwestern Lehigh's Cole Miller won the 2A boys tournament with a score of 73.
"The whole premise was, no one from Catty had made it through into the district before," Gilmartin said. "Making it here was that mark I wanted to leave on Catty."
Harsh windy conditions and downpour rain suspended play on Monday more than halfway through the tournament. The remaining holes were picked back up on Tuesday morning, and Gilmartin resumed play at hole 11.
Like many other golfers, Gilmartin's play on Tuesday produced much better results than Monday.
"I felt a lot better today [Tuesday]," Gilmartin said. "I only made one par today, but I avoided any trouble [and] any double-bogeys or anything like that. That one par I had should've been a birdie, unfortunately.
"I shot a 50 on the front, and then I came back and shot a 42 on the back. I'm pretty happy with the 42."
Looking to become the first regional-qualifier out of Catasauqua, Gilmartin understood the importance of putting together a complete, solid round over the two-day tournament. While his score on the final nine holes was certainly solid, it was a number of errors on Monday on holes 1 and 2 that gave him trouble.
"I knew that you had to be top six, [and] I have to play perfect," Gilmartin said. "As soon as I made the triple, I knew I was playing to be competitive at that point.
"The two holes where it started raining is when the club started slipping a little bit. I had a triple and a quadruple bogey, which really hurt."
Despite a number of bogeys throughout the tournament, Gilmartin's solid putting helped the junior par four holes.
He's also a member of the Rough Riders' football team, so he's had more on his plate as the season is progressing. Still, that hasn't deterred him from a solid showing in districts.
"I felt really good with the putter for the first time in awhile," Gilmartin said. "I hit my driver pretty decent, [but] I was losing just a few yards to the left or right, and that was costing me. I didn't get a lot of shots at the green."
Central Catholic's Franca Hurtado won the 2A girls championship with a score of 83, and the Vikings also won the 2A team championships.
In 3A, Emmaus's Grant Schumaker captured the boys' title after edging out Parkland's Chad Hess in the second hole of a playoff, with a score of 75. Kelsey Patterson, also of Emmaus, won the girls championship with a round of 84, and the Hornets were crowned 3A team champions.
