Davis looks to lead Zephyrs
As a senior captain, Jen Davis has had her share of experiences in the Whitehall girls' soccer program and easily can relate and equate them and their effects through the years. In fact, Davis believes she can see a reflection of recent success in this year's club.
Two years ago, Davis, along with her sister, Emily, both proved to be integral players on the Zephyrs' run to the state final game in which they were defeated.
Since then, she has seen her sister and other notable players leave and has also watched the program take a different revolution.
Last season, Whitehall battled through district play, but they didn't receive a bid for the state tournament as a runner-up. With the final wave of players moving on such as all-time leading scorer Kayla Cunningham, the Zephyrs found themselves with an overall 9-7 mark to begin this week.
"This year is a lot different from the past," said Davis in comparison to the previous two seasons. "We lost some girls and we have a number of younger girls getting use to everything.
"In some ways, it has been hard to adjust. But we're all starting to come together."
Davis also has been adjusting to her new role, but it is one that isn't entirely new. She also credits assistant coach Bill Schopf, who has worked with her through the years.
"I have always has a leadership role in me," she said. "It took a little time with this new role, but I feel good about it. All of the girls have really responded well to one another."
Head coach George Romano knew he was making the right call.
"Jen Davis is one of the best players on the team," he stated. "She (Davis) has been a solid player for us over the past three years and she is a very hard worker. She has taken charge of the situation."
With a positive outlook and attitude, Davis is confident her team can make a deep run in the postseason. She sees several similarities to the state runner-up team.
"I believe this team can make it to states," said Davis, who plans to continue her studies at West Chester to pursue an athletic trainer's career beginning next fall. "We have a good mix of strong upper classmen and underclassmen that we had a few years ago.
"Everyone has really underestimated us because we have lost a number of girls. But we have a lot of good players and we're jelling at this point. We'll see how things go for us in the next few weeks."
