Council tired of newspapers being tossed

Northampton Borough Council President John Yurish is tired of promotional papers in plastic bags ending up in gutters and storm drains.

Addressing his colleagues at last Thursday's council meeting,

Yurish complained loudly of the mess these papers are leaving across town.

"It's just a pain in the butt," he said.

Yurish mentioned it appears as if two people in an unmarked white van once a week hurl the papers onto lawns and properties across the borough. They often end up on pavements, gutters and sidewalks.

"Can we classify it as litter?" Council Vice President Robert McHale asked.

Richard Ackerman, a former councilman and a zoning board member interjected, "Where it [papers] lands, it lands."

"Put that in the paper in bold print. It's an eyesore," Yurish said, directing his comment at a reporter.

One individual mentioned the source of the promotional papers comes out of Allentown.

Council did not take any action on the issue.

There have been similar complaints from others in surrounding communities of newspapers being hurled out of a white van. For instance, in Coplay, similar complaints have surfaced.

In other business, council gave the green light to the borough fire department to conduct its annual fundraiser coin toss Oct. 19, at 21st and Main streets, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
