Council taking action against park vandals

The Borough of Northampton is putting the hammer down on vandals.

Police are mounting an offensive they hope will lead to the identity and arrest of those who have recently damaged park equipment and buildings.

Borough Manager Gene Zarayko at last Thursday's council meeting briefed borough lawmakers on incidents taking place at a men's restroom at the Canal Street Park.

"It was necessary for a crew from the public works department to unclog a toilet, urinal and sink in the men's restroom at the Canal Street Park. It appeared that someone needed to entertain themselves and they filled each of these items with ground and clogged the sewer pipe," Zarayko said.

Council members do not find the incidents humorous and noted the individuals responsible for such damaging actions, most likely juveniles, will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

Ongoing incidents involving mischief and damage have also taken place at properties on Main Street in recent weeks.

In other business involving public works personnel, Keith Piescienski, public works and sewer chairman, reported a crew assisted Allen Township to unblock a clogged sewer line south of Route 329.

Motorists may have noticed all center lines on streets in the borough have been repainted for the season.

Interstate Line Painting, Hazleton, completed the work. The cost was approximately $7,000, according to Zarayko.

Public Works Supervisor Steve Gerny contacted UGI and made arrangements for gas service to be installed to the Jeffrey Lane pump station and the 21st and Mill streets pump station. Borough personnel will do the digging and UGI will install the necessary piping and meters.
