Borough to seek past due bill from UGI
Northampton Borough Council will be taking steps to recoup money owed by UGI.
At last Thursday's meeting, council learned UGI was on a list of companies owing the borough money.
"[From] May 16, 2006 to July 24, 2012, we have amassed a total of $6,696.63 in monies owed the borough that are uncollectible," borough Manager Gene Zarayko said. "Therefore, I am requesting permission to write off these accounts."
Scrutinizing the list of delinquent accounts, Councilman Ed Pany came across UGI and said it would not be a difficult task to contact the company, which owes the borough $1,235.98.
"It is my humble opinion we want to collect it in my lifetime," Pany said.
Zarayko said UGI has been contacted by the borough and its position was the debt is owed by a subcontractor which was performing a job in the borough for UGI and damages ensued.
Although council granted approval to "take the delinquent accounts off the books," Zarayko said UGI will again be notified.
Leroy Brobst, assistant to the borough manager, said UGI called the borough office last Friday and said they would pay the back debt. Brobst said if he owed UGI money, he would be legally required to pay the debt.
"I will believe it when I see it [check]," Brobst said Monday.
Brobst confirmed the borough has been in touch with UGI on several occasions concerning the debt owed. However, a resolution has not been reached between the borough and company.
Regarding other delinquent accounts, Brobst said past due monies mostly involve bills owed for not cutting weeds and brush, money for damages incurred when individual insurance companies denied claims and a damaged bus shelter.
Brobst said in one case the owner of the property died and his son is in a hospital long term in Pittsburgh.
Should the borough pursue legal action to collect the debt, the cost could greatly exceed what is owed the borough.
"Anyway, I like to clean it up," Zarayko said in asking for a vote on the back accounts.
The issue was placed on the council agenda for a vote.
