Supervisors call for meeting on emergency plan

After reviewing an updated emergency operations plan prepared by township staff, Upper Milford supervisors agreed they need more information and called for a meeting with the township fire chiefs and others who would be involved in emergency response.

"This [the updated plan] is a total waste," Supervisor Robert Sentner said at the Oct. 3 supervisors meeting. "I was looking for more specifics."

Supervisor George DeVault said he would like more details on how hazardous material spills would be handled and Sentner said he needs more information on evacuation routes.

In other action at the meeting, supervisors supported a proposal to ban open burning in a corner of the township adjacent to Emmaus, and recommended sending the proposal to the Planning Commission and its solicitor for review.

The proposal is in response to a petition submitted by resident Dennis Swaverly to initiate an open burning ban in what township manager Daniel DeLong called a "remote corner of the township which was never annexed by Emmaus." The area includes Golf Circle and North Second, Pine, Iroquois and Cherokee streets.

DeLong told supervisors they can enact an ordinance specific to one area of the township.

In other business, supervisors:

·Reported the Planning Commission has reviewed an updated zoning ordinance proposal from the Borough of Macungie and found it is consistent with the Southwest Lehigh County comprehensive plan and contains nothing objectionable. Supervisors agreed to support the planning commission's letter to that effect.

·Agreed to changes in the collection of local service taxes (formerly the Occupational Privilege Tax), which would have Berkheimer Tax Administrator collect those taxes.

·Agreed to allow the Lehigh Valley Amateur Radio Association to meet in the township building.

·Met in executive session for a half-hour to discuss personnel and legal issues.
