Pates Marchese, Swint take third at LVC

Revenge was sweet for Freedom's number three doubles tennis players, Corrine Marchese and Kaitlyn Swint, who captured third place and the bronze medal in the Lehigh Valley Conference Tennis Championships on Sept. 30 at Parkland High School.

After defeating Allen's Mary Gilbert and Karina Mendez 8-0, the Patriots then defeated Whitehall's Shadimon Navarro and Amanda Endy 8-1.

"The funny thing about the Whitehall match is that they beat us pretty badly [in the regular season]. It was a good win for us. We played really well, and it showed. We knew they were good, and they knew how to play doubles well," said Marchese.

The Patriot victory led to a match against Parkland's Shelly Knafo and Emily Hanson, which the Trojans won 10-6.

"That was probably one of the best matches we ever played. It was crazy. We were down a few points each game we played, but we came back," Marchese said.

The Patriots were especially proud because they had lost to Parkland in the regular season 6-1, 6-1.

"This time was a huge difference. We came back and fought for it. By the end of the season, Kaitlyn and I worked together really well," said Marchese.

Swint is a freshman, and Marchese is a senior.

"We always made sure not to hit to the net person because, more than likely, it would end the point. I'm in the back, and Kaitlyn is at the net. It's what she's known for, and she's really tall," Marchese said.

In the Patriots final match of the tournament, the pair defeated Central Catholic's Sirma Bubernack and Kathleen Stanus 10-8.

"We were so happy. Last year, I played four doubles, and we didn't make it past the first round. It was really exciting, and once we won the final point, Coach Val (Freedom's doubles coach) screamed. She was so happy for us," said Marchese.
