A lineup change during overtime resulted in a winning goal for Bethlehem Catholic last week, as Marisa Iannelli scored for the Hawks with six minutes remaining in their game against the Liberty Hurricanes.
Iannelli, a senior defender, said, "I was pushed up to midfield for overtime to help with the attack. Once I realized no one was marking me on the throw-in, I called for the ball. I had a lot of room to shoot. It looked like slow motion, and it looked like [Amelia Sapirman, the Liberty goalkeeper] thought it was going out of bounds."
Instead, the ball sailed into the upper corner of the goal.
"Everyone ran at me. It felt good," said Iannelli.
The Hawks have been dealing with injuries on the team, missing a starting midfielder and a starting defender, as of late.
Sapirman had 25 saves for the Hurricanes.
Iannelli said, "We had trouble finishing."
At halftime, Becahi coach Chris Bastidas told his Hawks that the game was not over, and that he thought they could win.
Becahi goalkeeper, Brigid Michels, had 11 saves.
Earlier last week, the Hawks defeated Allen 8-1, scoring seven goals in the first half.
In boys soccer, Freedom defeated Central Catholic 3-2. Mezen Abdulla scored twice, Nigel Long added a goal, and Josh Wasilik had seven saves for the Patriots.
Liberty's boys played to a 0-0 tie against Whitehall. Anthony Silva had five saves for the Hurricanes.
