Turn of the century

The St. Peter and Paul R.C. Sick and Beneficial Society, known as the Hungarian Hall, will celebrate its 100th anniversary Sunday.

The celebration will include a Mass at Queenship of Mary Church, followed by a reception and dinner at the Hungarian Hall banquet room at Canal and Stewart streets.

More than 250 people are expected to join the club for its 100th birthday.

The Mass will be held at 1:30 p.m. at the church on Newport Avenue. Rev. Francis P. Straka, pastor at Assumption Blessed Virgin Mary Church, will be the celebrant. The banquet and festivities will follow.

Dignitaries will join club members, along with officers, both past and present. State, federal and borough elected officials will present citations. Northampton Mayor Thomas D. Reenock will present a proclamation on behalf of the borough and council.

Koprive, a band from Hungary which is now touring the United States, will play at the Mass and at the reception.

The society has 114 active and some 700 social members.

St. Peter and Paul R.C. Sick and Beneficial Society was founded Oct. 4, 1913 by approximately 120 Hungarian immigrants. The men, many alone in their adopted country, saw a need for mutual help during times of illness and death.

The club has undergone additions and renovations throughout its history. The building is considered one of the more modern and elegant halls in the region.
