Robert W. Smith Jr., 89, of New Tripoli, died Sept. 30, 2013, in Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township.

He and his wife Christine C. (Kuhnsman-Mantz) Smith were married 42 years in August.

Born in Lynn Township, he was a son of the late Robert W. and Pauline Y. (Kistler) Smith.

A rural letter carrier in New Tripoli from 1965-80, he then was a school bus driver for the Northwestern Lehigh School District from 1980-88.

Past president of the Ontelaunee Lions Club, he was a member of St. Peter's Church, Lynnville.

He honorably served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1947-54, serving overseas in the Okinawa Operations and the occupation of Japan.

He was awarded the Air Medal for Meritorious Achievement in aerial flights during the Korean War.

He was a member of VFW Post 8344 and the Slatington American Legion.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son William R. of Allentown; daughters Janice E. of North Catasauqua, Deborah J., wife of Tony Salvatore of New Tripoli, and Dianne, wife of C. John Yocum of Trexlertown; sister Barbara L., wife of Willard Kressley of Orefield; grandchildren Sherri McGimpsey and Christopher Yocum; three great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother, Alfred E.

His services will be at 11 a.m. Oct. 4 at Keller Funeral Homes Inc., 6776 Madison St., New Tripoli, with the Rev. Kevin E. Fruchtl officiating.

Visitation will be from 9:30-11 a.m. Interment will be at Jerusalem Union Cemetery, Stony Run.
