Hodge reaches semis

During Monday's LVC girls tennis tournament at Parkland High, a number of Northampton players advanced to the quarterfinal rounds of their respective brackets.

Leah Hodge the No. 11 seed in the No. 1 singles bracket defeated Easton's Cynthia Blay, the No. 6 seed, 8-4, in the first round, and had a solid run in the tournament.

She was able to execute well-placed shots on the court in defeating Blay.

"I was more consistent than her," Hodge said. "I placed it into the corners and deeper, [and] I gave lobs for some of them." Placed in a bracket with the likes of Parkland's Jenna Peng, Freedom's Flannery Johnston, Liberty's Samantha Peterson and Emmaus's Kelly Nguyen, Hodge understood it would be tough to capture a medal.

But that didn't stop her from remaining competitive in her matches.

"I just came in positive, and I just wanted to have fun," Hodge said. "I didn't have any high expectations of winning anything or placing.

"I thought I did well. Maybe I could've played a little better in my second match. But it happens." Hodge then fell to Peterson, the tournament's eventual runner-up in the No. 1 singles bracket, 8-3, in the quarterfinals. Hodge entered the tournament with a 4-7 record in the regular season.

"She came to the net a lot, and I couldn't get it over her head," Hodge said. "She was just more consistent than I was. I hit a lot out and into the net." The Konkrete Kids' No. 3 doubles team of Jolene Stearns and Delaney Haggerty defeated Easton's Amanda Tyrrell and Kristina Litonjni in the fist round, 8-0, before falling to Central Catholic's Sirma Bubernack and Kathleen Stanus in the quarterfinals.

Georgia Weaver and Mary Engle represented the Konkrete Kids' No. 2 doubles pair, and were awarded a bye in the first round. They then fell to Central Catholic's Hannah Pruzinsky and Alyssa Aviles in the quarterfinals, 8-5. The No. 4 doubles duo of Jenna Meixsell and Grace Lewis fell in the first round.

In No. 2 singles play, Sabrina Searock fell to Bethlehem Catholic's Emily Hozza in a 10-8 tiebreaker in the first round. No. 3 singles player Emma Angle advanced to the quarterfinals against Parkland's TuQuyen Pham after defeating Liberty's Emily Moss. Angle then lost to Pham, 8-2.

Parkland was able to capture first place finishes in each bracket and was rewarded as LVC champs, improving their consecutive league tournament championships to seven years.
