Couple retires after 62 years running Berlinsville Hotel

Gloria and Mike Kravetz recently decided it was time to retire.

The couple spent 62 years running the Berlinsville Hotel in Lehigh Township. They sold the hotel two months ago.

Why sell the business after running it for more than half a century?

"My husband is 90 and I'm 79," Gloria said. "We thought it was time to retire."

The hotel, which was originally purchased by Mike's parents and passed down to him, offered a wide array of food items, from cheesesteaks to pizza and pierogies.

In 1963, Gloria came aboard with her husband to help run the hotel.

The hotel, Gloria said, not only served as a restaurant but also as a social outlet for the townspeople.

"Everybody was always friendly," she said. "Everybody knew each other."

Gloria believes the hotel's success was due to its ability to promote and foster interaction among the customers.

"It was a mom and pop place," she said. "There were no TVs. Everybody talked to each other."

At the moment, the Kravetzes are living upstairs from the hotel and enjoying retirement.

"We like living in this place," she said. "We met a lot of great people."

The hotel, located at 4588 Lehigh Drive, Walnutport, is under new ownership and remains open for business.
