Council questioned on parking

Michael Bernini addressed borough council at its recent meeting regarding parking lines painted on both sides of Ninth Street near the Northampton Lieder-kranz.

Bernini, a member of the Northampton Zoning Board of Adjustment and a former councilman, said he was speaking on behalf of residents, including himself. He noted no residents requested the white painted parking lines.

He said the white markings were short and at least one vehicle extended over the allotted area.

Borough Manager Gene Zarayko said the spaces were 20 feet long, more than what PennDOT requires.

After Bernini's appearance before council Sept. 5, borough public works personnel removed the white painted lines on the west side of Ninth Street, using black paint. The white painted lines remained in front of the Northampton Lieder-kranz, the east side of Ninth Street, and the adjoining side street.

Bernini returned at the Sept. 19 meeting because the issues with parking had not been resolved although the white striped parking space markings had been removed. The markings remain on Siegfried Avenue.

Mike Saul, vice president of the Northampton Liederkranz, said the club requested the white line markings. Club officials thought they were being a "good neighbor" by making the request.

Council, however, moved onto other borough business without taking any action on the issue.

No time limits or other restrictions apply to the parking spaces.
