Asmar, Yenser take silver
Sophomore Celine Asmar and Freshman Emily Yenser may be two of the younger players on the Whitehall girls' tennis team, but you wouldn't necessarily guess it based on their performance this season.
During Monday's LVC Girls' Tennis Tournament at Parkland High School, the No. 4 doubles duo took even another step forward.
Entering the tournament with an 8-1 regular season record when pairing up together, Asmar and Yenser won their first two doubles matches en route to a finals appearance against Parkland's Libby Gardner and Kristen McCarty.
But despite their best effort, the duo came up just a bit short and fell 10-2 in the finals, earning a second-place finish in the No. 4 doubles bracket.
"I think we worked really hard to get there," Yenser said. "I think they just outplayed us a little bit. We were young and we're gaining more experience." The two defeated Central Catholic's Logan Koval and Amy Miklos in the quarterfinals, 8-4, and earned a 10-4 win over Nazareth's Hannah Madden and Leah Colussi in the semifinals.
"[We were] keeping it away from the net player," Yenser said. "Our strategy was pretty good." "Our mental game was pretty good," Asmar added.
While the two just started playing together at the beginning of the season, they didn't hold themselves short on their goal of achieving a top three finish.
"We just met this year, but I think we got along pretty well from the start," Asmar said. "I think we were a good match." "We're good at keeping each other positive in the game," Yenser added.
No. 2 singles player Laura Youwakim defeated Nazareth's Mihkayla Stefanik in the first round, 8-2, to advance into the quarterfinals. Despite remaining competitive until the final point, Youwakim fell to Central Catholic's Sabrina Elward, 8-7, in the quarterfinals.
Also in singles competition, No. 3 player Nicole Tock defeated Easton's Elise Herschlag in the first round, 8-6, before falling to eventual runner-up Federica Maranzana of Freedom in the quarterfinals. No. 1 singles player Eiman Nazif fell to Bethlehem Catholic's Taylor Treadwell in the first round.
In doubles action, No. 3 doubles duo of Shadimon Navarro and Amanda Endy fell in the quarterfinals to Freedom's Kaitlyn Swint and Corrine Marchese. No. 2 doubles team Christina Endy and Audrey Anatalio fell in the opening round to Central Catholic's Hannah Pruzinsky and Alyssa Aviles.
Parkland captured first place finishes in each bracket, earning their seventh straight LVC title. They've been crowned champs every season since the 2007 campaign.
