LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Races come down to wire

It's getting down to crunch time in the volleyball season and Liberty and Freedom are looking to clinch district berths as the season winds down to its final two weeks.

Liberty (7-6, 4-5) and Freedom (4-6, 4-5) are both on the cusp of qualifying for the postseason, but will need to close out the season on positive notes if they want to clinch berths.

Liberty needs to win two matches out of their last five in order to solidify a postseason berth, while Freedom needs three LVC wins in their final five bouts to clinch.

The Patriots, who have only missed the postseason three times in Joe Yoo's 31 years and who haven't missed in over 10 years, have matches with Emmaus (10-1) and Dieruff (1-13) this week. The Pates figure they should beat the Huskies, which would presumably leave them with needing two wins against either Easton (4-7), Bethlehem Catholic (7-5) or Liberty (7-6) next week.

"The way it looks now, it's going to come down to the end," said Yoo. "We just haven't been able to finish games. We get scores in the 20s and then can't close out the games. It's really been the story of our season."

That became more apparent last weekend at the Haverford tournament, where Freedom went 1-8 and found themselves in similar situations of having the chance to close out games, but not being able to do so.

"It became apparent that it was a mental thing for us on Saturday," Yoo said. "We need to get past that if we want to get into districts."

Liberty has Nazareth (6-5) and Northampton (6-8) this week before closing out next week with divisional matchups. Head coach Missy Lynn knows her team's magic number is two and would like to get that out of the way this week.

"We play an enthusiastic and intense Nazareth team for our Dig Pink match Tuesday," said Lynn. "Like us, they are a young team with a ton of potential. We will need to be at our strongest to win. When we are focused and passing well, the rest falls into place."

Bethlehem Catholic (7-5) has already clinched a district berth for the 2A postseason, but still have their eyes set on winning the division to qualify for the LVC playoffs.

The Hawks take on Emmaus and Dieruff this week as well, with the Emmaus match being a gauge for where the team is at before they head into the final week of the season.
