All the pieces came together for Liberty tennis player, Samantha Peterson, when the Hurricane sophomore won the silver medal at number one singles in the Lehigh Valley Conference Tennis Tournament on Monday at Parkland High School.
"I just kind of went for it no matter what. My ground strokes, in general, and my forehand were good today," Peterson said.
Peterson began the day with an 8-3 victory over Northampton's Leah Hodge.
"I played pretty consistent [against Hodge]," she said.
Peterson's cross town rival from Freedom, Flannery Johnston, won her match against Central Catholic's Marina Zardet 8-4, setting up a Hurricane-Patriot rematch. Just last week, Peterson lost to Johnston, but on Monday, Peterson scored the 10-5 victory.
"It felt amazing. Again, I had to go for it. I was basically fearless, and my net game was really good. It was the best feeling ever, since I lost [to Johnston last week]," said Peterson.
Liberty coach Leo Schnalzer knew his number one singles player had the potential to medal.
"I've seen segments of that, but today, they were much longer, and she played to her capability. She served beautifully. She moved well on the court. She just came out with a good mindset to play the best tennis she could play. It's nice to see how capable she is when she does that, and it builds her confidence," Schnalzer said.
Peterson's final match of the day was a 10-5 loss to Parkland's Jenna Peng, but that did not dampen her spirits.
"I did better than I expected. I prepared at practice, but I never expected this," Peterson said.
