Freedom tops Liberty

In the final rivalry match of the girls tennis season, Freedom defeated Liberty 7-0 last week at Freedom.

Maranzana said, "Last year we lost against Liberty, so [winning] is always nice. We're definitely doing better than last year. I feel like our three singles [players] are strong, and our [team] record is much better."

At number one doubles, Marlena Krcelich and Madison McTier defeated Marisa DeLuca and Martina Gale 8-3.

At number two doubles, Elizabeth McCarthy and Marissa Mele defeated Abby Frankenfield and Katie Kametz 6-3, 6-2. Freedom coach Mark Sigmon said, "My doubles have thoroughly exceeded my expectations. Each one is over 50%. My singles players have a total of about seven losses in 42 matches. That's our strength."

Freedom High School 2012 graduate, Valeria Ceron, has assisted Sigmon this season, focusing on the doubles players.

"I usually do a lot of drills with them and try to work with them one-by-one. I just take my time with them. We all respect each other, and even though we're close in age, they still see me as an adult," Ceron said.
