'Canes look to finish strong
Liberty's field hockey team doesn't have much to worry about heading into the stretch run of their season.
Freedom and Bethlehem Catholic don't really either. The difference is that the Hurricanes are heading into a different direction as their counterparts, as Liberty (8-4, 7-2) have essentially sealed the division title, to clinch them a spot in the LVC playoffs, barring a major late-season collapse.
Bethlehem Catholic (2-10, 2-7) and Freedom (2-9, 2-7) are headed the opposite way, mathematically eliminated from the postseason, looking to build for the future in their final games.
But if there's one thing that any of the programs want to avoid at the moment, it's complacency, whether you're doing well like Liberty or swimming through rough waters like Becahi and Freedom.
" I think we are in a comfortable spot right now, but I don't want the girls to 'get comfortable,'" said Liberty head coach Mary Kathryn Omdahl.
"I want them to want more and to continue to improve and strengthen their game. Consistency has been extremely important. We have not found consistency across an entire game yet, but we are working to fix that. The goal is to play 60 minutes all out with no mental lapses."
Charis Innarella has been through plenty of good years at Freedom, but the Pates have struggled to get things moving in the right direction as of late. Freedom lost to Pocono Mountain East 3-0 over the weekend to continue a tough year, but Innarella remains positive.
"We understand we have work to do," she said. "We are proud of the fact that we have made some strides and practices have been positive and everyone is staying together as a team.
"We're working to create more scoring opportunities and everyone understands the depth of intensity they need to bring with each game.
"True character is revealed in times of struggle. I have belief and confidence in my team and know that tomorrow will be the start of good things including a strong push to finish out the season."
Becahi head coach Luke Wilde is enduring his first year as boss of the program and knew he had obstacles heading into his first year as coach.
He hopes that some of the lessons learned from this season can help the program grow further in the future.
"I knew that coming into this year we had a good amount of skill and athleticism, but that we had to fill 7-8 starting positions on the field after losing a good group of seniors last year," he said. Developing chemistry and gaining experience has come in the form of some tough losses.
"I think we still have a way to go at this point. It is unfortunate that we have had to suffer so many losses, but hopefully our team can learn from them and become more competitive. We need to continue to work hard, and make sure we work to prepare for next season."
While next season may be on the mind of Wilde, Omdahl is focusing on finishing this season strong.
"We need to come into the second half of divisional play like we are fighting for our lives and make a statement," she said. "I think we need to use these games to secure a good standing and boost our confidence heading into post season."
