ALBURTIS BOROUGH COUNCIL Members vote to take over Lockridge Church
Glenn Solt of Lehigh County Authority asked Alburtis Borough Council President Steve Hill if the borough intends to go through with taking over the Lockridge Church. Solt wants to know before the next Lehigh County Authority meeting.
"If you do, it is not going to be strictly for the historical society," Hill said. "It will be used for other purposes."
"They (the county) sent a copy of the deed but not the ordinance," Solicitor David Knerr said.
Following a brief discussion, council passed a motion to take over the church under three conditions suggested by Councilperson David Lehr: predicated on the understanding a show of accounting for two thirds of the property must be moved from a trust to the county (to make sure the county is the sole owner of the property at the time of take over; the restrictions language must be corrected; and $50,000 is still included when ownership changes hands.
Hill was against the vote to take over the church.
"I'm opposed to it because I just can't see saddling council, 20 years from now, with a money pit," Hill said.
Borough residents will be getting new updated water meters beginning in 2014 or 2015, council decided at the Sept. 25 meeting. These new meters will save time because when driving by a person's home, a hand-held device can read them and the information stored in the device would be uploaded to a computer in the borough office and processed immediately.
Chairman of the water committee Cathy Moyer reported the committee decided they would begin installing meters at Jaindl's new development and then in the borough over a four-year plan incrementally.
Jaindl will pay for the meters in his development and borough homeowners would pay for their meters. The borough would install the meters free of charge. Council passed a motion authorizing Executive Secretary Sharon Trexler to purchase 90 meters, one hand-held device, software and training.
The hockey court in Alburtis was dedicated to Althea and Jeannette Walbert Sept. 25. "We had a nice ceremony today for the Walbert dedication," Mayor Kathleen Palmer reported to council.
Council passed a motion approving a request from the Borough of Macungie to use Alburtis Fire Police for its annual Halloween parade.
A broken plumber's snake is still lodged in the lateral at 104 Front St. and a plumber asked to prepare an estimate to remove it requested the area be recorded again so he can see where it is stuck and complete the estimate, Trexler said. Council approved, if needed, but the property owner needs to be contacted to get inside.
Council went into an executive session to discuss possible litigation at approximately 7:55 p.m. but took no action when the regular meeting resumed and was immediately adjourned 8:15 p.m.
