Trick-or-treat: It's on Halloween
Northampton Borough Councilman Anthony Lopsonzski recommended the borough join other communities by holding trick-or-treat for children Friday, Oct. 25.
However, his request, made at last Thursday's council meeting, failed to gain support from council.
The borough traditionally holds trick-or-treat night Oct. 31.
Lopsonzski contended Northampton's trick-or-treat night is "notorious" with parents from out of town because it takes place later than in other communities.
Because parents from Allentown, Bath, Nazareth and elsewhere bring their children to the borough for trick-or-treat night, Lopsonzski sought to have the event take place the same night as it does elsewhere.
He said he had children from as far as Quakertown at his house during previous trick-or-treat nights.
Councilman Robert Coleman said council addressed the issue several years ago and was besieged by a large group of mothers who wanted the event to remain Oct. 31.
The hours for trick-or-treat will be 6 to 8 p.m. Homeowners are asked to turn on their porch lights if they want to invite children to their premises.
Borough police will be out in full force to help ensure everyone's safety.

In other business, Councilman Anthony Lopsonzski Jr., building, land and recreation chairman, reported the annual cheerleading competition will be held 6 a.m.-9 p.m. Nov. 3 at the Northampton Area High School gym.
"This is a major fundraiser for the recreation center," Lopsonzski said.
He also said the annual cleaning and screening of the recreation center gym floor has been completed.
"As usual, R&S Hardwood Flooring has done an excellent job," borough Manager Gene Zarayko said.
Council approved Zarayko's request for no parking signs on Lilac Court from Lincoln Avenue to Washington Avenue.
"There will be no parking signs posted in both sides of Lilac Court. This is an extremely narrow street and when cars park there it is almost impossible to get through," Zarayko said.
