Moravian Update Eck shining for Greyhounds

Moravian senior goalkeeper Andrea Eck (Catasauqua, Pa./Catasauqua) and the Moravian College field hockey defense are ranked in the top 25 in multiple categories the week of Sept. 16 in NCAA Division III statistics release.

The veteran keeper has played all but 35 minutes during Moravian's 3-2 start to the 2013 season, which included a 90-minute double-overtime on Saturday. Her 0.84 goals against average ranks 25th in Division III.

As a team, the Greyhounds rank 14th in the nation with a 0.76 goals against average. While Eck's 19 saves and one shutout played a huge role in that number, Moravian also received contributions from freshman goalkeeper Megan Kanyuk, senior Erin Gilbert, junior Bryn Tafuri, sophomore Rebecca Hamel and freshman Marisa Pacitti.

Thanks to Eck's shutout of DeSales University in the season-opener on August 31, and the combined shutout of Cedar Crest College on September 11, the Greyhounds sport a 0.4 shutouts per game mark, good for 25th in Division III.

Eck is also climbing the ranks in the Moravian history book. After Saturday's 2-1 double-overtime loss to William Paterson University, Eck's career goals against average was 1.54. That mark is good for third place in school history. If the senior goalie records one more clean sheet, she will move into a third place tie with Maura Acox's seven shutouts.

Eck and the Moravian backline are back in action on Tuesday, September 17 when they travel to Albright College for a non-conference match under the lights at 7 p.m.

The Greyhounds did not rest easy with the 2-1 lead. For the remaining 26 minutes of the match, Moravian kept the offensive pressure coming, and the defense did not allow another shot on senior goalkeeper Andrea Eck (Catasauqua, Pa./Catasauqua), who posted one save in her fourth victory of the year in goal.

WHITEHALL

The Moravian College and William Paterson University field hockey teams needed 91 minutes to decide a winner on Saturday, Sept. 14, at Rocco Calvo Field, and the Pioneers came away with the 2-1 victory in double-overtime.

The squads battled back and forth in the first half, but both defenses shined as the match went into halftime in a scoreless tie. William Paterson got on the board first with a deflected goal in the 59th minute.
