John McKenzie is looking to the Northampton Exchange Club membership to make changes to its Community Days Fair for 2014.
A discussion was held at the club's dinner meeting Sept. 4 on ways to make the four-day event held in July at the municipal park attractive to a larger crowd and how to use the programs to draw the public to the fair.
McKenzie, who serves as club president, spoke of having a budget set early for the Community Days fair so the group can secure entertainment. An increased public relations campaign and advertising, it was said, are essential to attract the public.
McKenzie showed the membership sketches illustrating a fair offering more vendors, food and games. One sketch showed approximately 35 vendors, including 18 food sellers.
The issue of selling adult beverages such as beer was brought up. The board of directors will discuss the issue at future meetings.
Sponsorship of the bands and music groups that perform at the event was also discussed.
It was reported the Little Miss Northampton pageant drew large numbers of girls competing for the honors, and was one of the most successful in recent years.
The whiffle ball tournament that was held for the second consecutive year was also a huge success.
The carnival, an annual attraction for children, will most likely continue. Although not a major moneymaker for the club, families enjoy the children's rides.
Fireworks held on the closing night also will most likely continue.
One idea was having a student organizations at the high school walk through the crowds seeking donations. This could be used as a fundraiser in conjunction with the Exchange Club reaping additional funds.
