Kids struggle at LVC tournament

Monday's performance in the Lehigh Valley Conference Golf Championship is one that saw Northampton struggle often.

In a tournament that saw Parkland's Chad Hess capture gold with a 2-over par round of 73, the Konkrete Kids had some trouble in terms of keeping up with their season averages.

Kevin Kunkle - who averaged a 72 in the regular season-was the team's highest scorer on Monday, tallying a round of 82 for the day. He finished in 21st place.

"I was driving the ball well, but I was just off by a little bit," Kunkle said. "That kind of just messes you up here.

"I was really looking toward 71 or 72. I just didn't have it today."

Emmaus's Grant Schumaker, who shot a 74, and Carlos Fullerton, who tallied a 75, came in second and third place respectively in the tournament.

A combination of strong winds at times, and pins positioned in awkward spots, may have had a bit of an impact on some of the players' scores. No golfer was able to shoot par on the day.

"The pins were just in tough spots," Kunkle said. "The course was a nice course. They had the pins in such odd locations, and I just didn't really have it today."

Kunkle was able to get off to a solid start early, but a few small miscues halfway through the round hurt that momentum going forward.

"I actually started pretty well," Kunkle said. "In the middle of the round, I made a couple of bad bogeys and it went down hill."

Tyler Smith was averaging a 73 on the season, but Monday's round of 84 had him in an unfamiliar position this year. He finished the day in 27th place for the Konkrete Kids.

Anthony Cavallo and Carter Test both shot an 83, compared to season averages of 77 and 78 respectively.

Derek Kressler shot an 87, and Tyler Nicholas finished the day with a score of 90.

After Parkland and Emmaus were tied at 389 in the team championships, Parkland was awarded the title on a tiebreaker. The tiebreaker was awarded to the team's lower sixth golfer of the tournament, which in turn was Parkland's Parker Lessel, who shot a 90.
