Info on house numbering to be mailed

A brochure will soon be mailed to residents of Allen Township providing them with information on the proposed house numbering legislation.

The change will take place to make it easier for fire departments, rescue squads and ambulances to locate properties in the event of an emergency.

After making some changes to the proposed house numbering draft at its September meeting, the supervisors decided to put together a brochure that will answer frequently asked questions.

Township Manager Ilene Eckhart said the house numbers will most likely need to be four inches high on signs at residences. The signs must be posted on mailboxes or on other structures so they are visible from the road. This way, if an emergency takes place, those responding will be able to locate the properties more quickly.

After discussing various colors for the house numbers, the board selected green.

Once the ordinance on the house numbering signs is approved, residents will have six months to comply. Supervisor Chairman Paul Balliet recommended giving residents a year to comply, but the other board members felt six months provided enough time.

The proposed legislation, with the changes, will be re-advertised before the board votes on adopting the ordinance. The board offered no timetable for when a vote might take place, but officials don't expect the matter to remain pending very long.
