Girls continue playoff push
The Whitehall girls volleyball team got back on the winning track, shutting down the Huskies as they continue their march toward the postseason.
After dropping three consecutive matches, the Zephs found some home cooking to their liking, toppling Dieruff High School 25-9, 25-10, 25-17 at Zephyr Gymnasium on Monday night. Their season record now stands at 4-6.
The win signified a return to form for the Zephs who have been steadily improving throughout the season. Head coach Rob Gardner said that Monday's win was highlighted by their ability to handcuff the Huskies with their serves.
"We served really well," he said.
Their capacity to generate points off the serve was underscored by Cristal Fernandez who had four aces.
He also said they reacted well every time the ball was in the air, making sure they were in good position to execute a good shot.
"The girls were moving and playing and having a good time," said Gardner.
Gardner also noted that the Zephyrs also did a good job of playing "at their level" against the Huskies who every year valiantly try to keep pace with the more established programs in the Lehigh Valley Conference.
The win also featured 8 kills by Olivia Bobyak and 8 digs from libero Kori Koehler.
Saturday's game to Pleasant Valley High School ended in a sweep for the Bears 25-15, 25-20, 25-19. Gardner said the team didn't play too bad, they just couldn't put the ball down when they needed. He said their inability to convert that final hit was the Achilles heel in the nonleague match against the Bears.
"We just had a hard time of putting the ball away," said Gardner.
While the Zephs may struggle with hitting the ball with authority at times, they have been adept at limiting unforced errors. Gardner said that they've been good at getting to balls, they just don't provide enough oomph at times to deliver the winning blow.
He said they remain scrappy and move well, they just need to get the ball down more consistently, utilizing their talented front line to get points.
Still, they have a young team that will grow every game, benefiting from the experience gained by Koehler, Fernandez, Tanesia Rehrig, Rebecca Lutterschmidt, Liz Lynch, Autumn Puello, Emily Castro and Anna Gallina.
