Field hockey gets by Allen in close game
After four-straight shutout wins, Northampton's field hockey team needed something "to stay focused."
And the Konkrete Kids got that kind of game Tuesday as they stopped a "very aggressive and physical" Allen team 2-1 in overtime.
The win, coming on Megan Wiest's goal on an assist from Kate Fehnel at the 7:12 mark in the extra period, not only ran the Kids' win streak to six, but also assured them a spot in the District 11 playoffs for the sixth time under coach Kelly Backenstoe.
"The girls never lost focus," said Backenstoe after her team boosted its record to 7-1 in the Lehigh Valley Conference and 9-1 overall with eight games remaining on the Kids' schedule.
After blanking Dieruff (3-0) and Bethlehem Catholic (6-0), the Kids shut out Freedom 5-0 and Central Catholic 11-0 to set the scene for their overtime victory.
"Our goalie (Shannon Dalton) was outstanding," said Backenstoe. "She had six saves and our defense (led by Autumn Klucsarits and Amber Saylor) sucked it up," Backenstoe added.
"Allen's very aggressive and physical, but we dominated play. Our fitness and endurance came to the forefront. I was proud of our offense, especially on corners," she added.
Northampton took a 1-0 lead in the game with less than two minutes left when Bri Dalton banged on a corner shot on an assist from Taylor Kerbacher.
But, Allen tied it at the 21:40 mark of the second half on Kelsey Rodriguez's corner shot off an assist from Mayich Brown. The rest of regulation was a defensive battle with goalie Shannon Dalton and Allen's Christopher Santana butting away several "on point shots."
Goalie Dalton had six saves while the Chicks' Santana weathered 14 K-Kid shots.
Northampton had trounced Central Catholic 11-0 in the LVC's Don Hunt Memorial "Play Day" game at Whitehall on Saturday with Rachel Heimbach getting a "hat trick" (3 goals), Wiest and Kerbacher adding a piece and Fehnel, Meghan Hemingway, Alyssa Tomsic and Kennedy Jamicky also scoring.
Against Freedom last Thursday, Heimbach again had "the hat trick" with Wiest and Makenna Marhefka also scoring.
Northampton returns to action at home today (Thursday) against Easton in another LVC game, then entertaining Mountain Valley Conference power Stroudsburg in a 1 p.m. contest Saturday.
Next week's schedule does not get any easier as the Kids visit Liberty on Tuesday and defending LVC champion on Wednesday.
