Catty fights for D-11 berth
The Catasauqua boys soccer season continues to take a roller-coaster ride.
The team won it's first game after going 0-18 last season, and then was 2-2 after four games. But, the team would hit a six-game losing streak in the middle of their year, but currently sit at 4-8.
Such is life for head coach Mike Baclawski, who is trying to build from the ground up.
"The coaching staff did an excellent job this offseason in getting our guys to play as much soccer as possible to help them gain experience," Baclawski said. "Last year's team had no seniors. We didn't even have a single player who could drive to practice. We knew this year, we wouldn't have youth as an excuse."
Catty returned all of its varsity players from a year ago and felt commitment to the offseason program was exceptional. Catty had a winter league team at the Turffclub, competed in a Pleasant Valley tournament, a Parkland tournament and had a U19 team that trained twice a week and had games on weekends. Catty had its own summer league where current players played full sided games against former players and local coaches which became a friendly rivalry, according to Baclawski.
"We had a very intense and focused preseason, and we had some nice results against Northampton and Allen in our preseason games," Baclawski said. "We didn't win the games, but we saw how competitive we could be."
As for the losing streak, it did come against a lot of Colonial League South teams, which are some of the better teams in the league. Still, Baclawski saw positives.
"We saw some good things from our guys, but we made too many mistakes in the games that you just cant make against teams like Southern Lehigh, Saucon Valley, and Moravian Academy," Baclawski said. "We had a game last week against Notre Dame of Green Pond where we lost 3-0, but the game was wide open and end to end the entire 80 minutes."
The coach feels the team can correct some issues by just shooting the ball. He said the focus in practice shifted to creating opportunities and shooting.
This past Saturday against Jim Thorpe, the Roughs came out and dominated the game and shot the ball often. It was 0-0 at halftime, before the Roughs exploded for four goals in the second half and a 4-1 win.
Catty beat Palmerton 2-1 on goals from Ethan Hill and Nick Rossnagle and even played shorthanded after a CHS player was ejected.
"Our guys showed heart and character that will not only help them to be successful on the field, but will also help them to persevere through adversity in all walks of life," Baclawski said. "These guys came together and showed the true meaning of the word team."
With 18 minutes left, Lester Estrada drove a low corner kick which found an open Hill crashing the goal and smashing the ball into the back of the net to break the scoreless tie. However 30 seconds later, Palmerton found the back of our net from a beautiful shot from the outside from Austin Shupp.
With three minutes left to play in regulation, Lester Estrada found Nick Rossnagle in space who then dribbled by two players with speed and precision, and pushed the ball past the goalkeeper for the game winning goal.
Catty needs to win four of its last six games to qualify for districts.
"There isn't a single player on this team that doubts what we are capable of doing," Baclawski said.
