Williams makes big plays in win over LHS

Senior running back Kareem Williams went back and forth with emotions after three big plays in a span of about a minute.

Williams scored Parkland's opening touchdown against Liberty on a 19-yard rush with 4:07 left in the first quarter.

After a Liberty 80-yard touchdown on the next play made the score 7-6 (extra point blocked), the Hurricanes hit a short kickoff which was bobbled by Williams and recovered by a Liberty special teams player.

Instead of putting his head down, Williams made up for his mistake when he intercepted a pass from Doug Erney to swing momentum back in favor of the Trojans.

"I was happy after the touchdown, and then was upset right after with the fumble," Williams said. "I had to do something for coach because I haven't been doing too well on defense this year so I had to get something done."

Williams and sophomore quarterback Devante Cross each ran for 102 yards and combined for three touchdowns to give Parkland (3-1 overall, 2-1 LVC) a 34-6 win over Liberty at Bethlehem Area School District stadium last Friday night, an important conference victory before a showdown against undefeated Whitehall on Friday.

"This is something we definitely want to build off of," said Williams. "It was a huge win. It was more than someone could say or fantasize about. We had to get our confidence after the loss to Easton, and we're moving on."

The big run would be all the Trojan defense would allow as Parkland went on to score 27 unanswered points.

Along with Williams and Cross, Eli Redmond added 59 yards rushing in an offense which was run-first, accumulating 57 rushes for 261 yards.

"I think the most effective thing was our line," said Williams. "If it wasn't for them we wouldn't have gotten anywhere."

The big blow came early in the fourth quarter when Redmond returned a punt 87 yards to give the Trojans a 27-6 lead. They were able to run out the clock for most of the second half. The offensive line came up big, paving the way for the ball carriers to eat up yards and time off the clock.

The defense, which did not allow many big plays or first downs, was also aided by the special teams play of kicker Jake Bissell. Bissel connected on field goals from 42 and 34 yards. Four of his seven kickoffs were downed for touchbacks as he gave Liberty bad field position all game long.

Williams's second rushing touchdown, from 22 yards out just before halftime, took the life out of the Hurricanes. Cross scored on a 12-yard scramble late in the fourth.

Parkland will now turn its attention to another important Lehigh Valley Conference clash and rivalry game Friday when it hosts Whitehall (4-0 overall, 3-0 LVC).
