EASTERN SALISBURY COLUMN Salisbury Township hosting bus trip to New York City
Rust rimmed leaves are making their appearance, in and around the Northeast. Autumn has arrived.
Have you ever wondered where the word, "autumn" originated? It was birthed from the Old French word, autompne, and was later altered to the original Latin word autumnus. In the 12th century, there are very few examples of its usage. During this time period, the term, harvest was the chosen expression for the season. The root of this word can be traced back to the Germanic and Scottish languages. In German, it translates as herbst and to the Scots it is known as hairst. By the 16th century, harvest was reinstated as a verb, and the word autumn was adopted, as a familiar phrase for the season. The word, fall was also being used in 16th century England. The Old English and the Old Norse dialog, share the same meaning for this term, "To fall from a height."
One interesting, international, fall fact: In Australia, autumn begins March 1 and ends May 31. (References - New Shorter Oxford English Dictionary 1997, Harper, Douglas, online Etymology Dictionary.) This breezy colorful season is a perfect time for explorations and to venture off to magical places.
