Trojans rout Kids
Earlier in the week head coach Jim Morgans was looking for more consistency for his Trojans football team. After a season-opening 50-8 drubbing of Delaware Valley, Parkland was shutout at Easton the following Friday in a game that the Red Rovers seemed to want a little more.
But last Friday night, back at the friendly confines of Orefield Middle School Stadium, the Trojans were dominant on both sides of the ball in a 48-7 win over Northampton for their first conference victory.
Parkland (2-1 overall, 1-1 Lehigh Valley Conference) outgained the Konkrete Kids 402-165 in total yards and was never threatened, taking a 35-0 lead into halftime.
The offense established the running game early and often. Eli Redmond found the end zone three times in the opening quarter and rushed for 64 yards. Morgans wanted to give his senior tailback more work.
"Coach said he wanted to get me more touches," Elder said. "I'm going to embrace it as a football player and captain of the team. I want to thank the lineman because they blocked well. We've worked on our offense a lot at practice. Last week we only had 60 yards of offense so we really wanted to bring it together this week."
Another senior running back, Kareem Williams, ran for 102 yards and a score. Sophomore quarterback Devante Cross received his first start and contributed two rushing touchdowns.
"In the first two drives I was nervous," said Cross. "But we handed the ball a lot and were able to score so that calmed me down. With our offense, we have some of the best backs in the league. We've just get out there and run."
The Trojans defense didn't give Northampton any space, and the Konkrete Kids struggled to move the ball.
Omar Haddad, Williams, Preston Saylor, and David Barber all accounted sacks for Parkland. Northampton did not tally a first down until 1:42 was left in the first quarter. The Konkrete Kids went three-and-out on their first three possessions.
Everyone was getting into the mix for the Trojans. Early in the fourth quarter, Erik DiGirolamo ran for a 27 yard touchdown for Parkland's final score of the game.
Even after a dominating win like Friday night's, Morgans knows the challenge his team faces against an improved Liberty team that the Trojans defeated 28-0 last season.
"This will be a true test to see if we're going in the right direction," said Morgans. "Defensively we've played well. Offensively is where I think we've made the most strides."
