Girls pick up two wins
The Northampton varsity girls soccer team continued to work hard and battle on the field this week as they faced Dieruff and Bethlehem Catholic in two away contests that both ended in wins.
After a hard-fought battle against Nazareth on Sept. 9 that ended with a 4-0 loss, the Northampton girls looked forward to the first of two games on the road against Dieruff on Wednesday, Sept. 11.
Northampton came out strong scoring a 9-0 victory. Leading the way for Northampton was senior Leandra Sterner with a total of four goals and one assist. Brianna Dotter and Jill Krupta also added two goals apiece and Courtney Hartzell drove in a goal for Northampton. Dotter, Hartzell and Lauren Sterner were also credited with assists. Northampton goalkeeper Anna Keffer made one save during the game.
The team continued their winning streak last week as they traveled to Bethlehem Catholic on Friday, Sept. 13. For Northampton head coach Gus Belaires, the match was a return to somewhere very familiar as Belaires once served as the Bethlehem Catholic head coach. In a contest that Belaires simply predicted would be "interesting," the team emerged victorious with a 3-2 win.
Leandra Sterner again led the Northampton scoring attack, getting the first Northampton goal in the first half on an assist from Brandy Moser. Bethlehem Catholic answered with a goal from Julie Madison, and the first half ended in a 1-1 tie.
With the second half under way, Bethlehem Catholic continued its drive with a goal from Bridget Parise.
But, Sterner answered with another goal, assisted once again from Moser, and the score was once again tied, this time at 2-2. Sterner would go on to score the winning goal, her third of the game. Northampton keeper Anna Keffer had a solid game with a total of seven saves.
Northampton ended the week with a 3-5 overall record (2-3 LVC).
At press time, the Northampton girls were slated to faceoff against Freedom on Sept. 17, and Allentown Central Catholic on Sept. 19.
