Dewey Avenue stop sign is approved

The Northampton Police Department's desire to make the 15th Street and Dewey Avenue intersection safer and less prone to vehicular accidents prompted borough council meeting to take action Sept. 5 on a request presented by borough Police Chief Ronald Morey.

Taking Morey's request before council, borough Manager Gene Zarayko reported there are stop signs for eastbound traffic on 15th Street and Dewey Avenue. Zarayko further noted existing stop signs at the northeast corner of Dewey Avenue at 15th Street.

Zarayko, however, said there is no stop sign at the southeast corner of Dewey Avenue.

"It is recommended by the police chief that we install one [stop sign] for northbound traffic on Dewey Avenue at 15th Street in front of the American Legion," Zarayko said.

Council concurred by voting unanimously in favor of Morey's request. The proposal was supported by Mayor Thomas Reenock.

It was also reported during the meeting, the annual Sister City celebration which took place Saturday was not held at the Sister Cities Monument on Laubach Avenue. Instead, the celebration took place at the municipal park pavilion.

A large crowd, said to number over 300 persons, was entertained by the Walt Groller Polka Orchestra. It was also said there was no wreath laying program in tribute to Stegersbach, Burgenland, Austria.

In recent years, the borough paid its respect to a borough resident or family whose roots and tradition is steeped in Burgenland. Many borough families of earlier generations originated from Burgenland before arriving in America, the borough and other communities in the region.

Councilman Anthony Lopsonzski Jr., recreation committee chairman, said the 2013-14 youth dances began a new season on Saturday. A dance for the seventh- and eighth- grade students was held at the borough recreation center on Lerchenmiller Drive.
