LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Roughies pull away from Southern Lehigh

Ra'Von Burton referred to it as a back-and-forth, backyard football game in which one team finally takes charge.

Head coach Tom Falzone doesn't want to leave the field from a game at 10:15 again anytime soon.

However, both player and coach were happy to walk away from the field after a three-plus hour, 62-35 shootout victory over Southern Lehigh last Friday night that left the Roughies with an undefeated 2-0 overall record as well as an unblemished Colonial League mark with Palisades and Notre Dame. Through their first two games, Catty has scored 105 points.

"Winning is all that matters," said a hoarse Falzone after the victory. "We knew they (Southern Lehigh) would be a tough challenge for us. We started quickly like we always do and we put up some points.

"But we know we have some things to fix."

Burton, who rushed for a game-high 202 yards on 21 carries with a touchdown, figured it would be an epic battle, but was glad for the final outcome in which the Roughies amassed 546 total yards.

"We knew we would have a great game with them and this was a game we had to win," said Burton. "It went back and forth until we finally took control. This turned out to be a wake-up call for us and we know every team is out after us. This win again let us know who we are as a tem and program."

The senior tailback/linebacker, who rushed for 158 yards in the team's opening win over Wilson, wants to make the most of every game.

"This is my last year and I want to do whatever I can each game," stated Burton. "I'm running as hard as I can and I want to be as punishing as I can. We seniors know this is it and we have something to prove again this year.

But we're still going to take one game at a time."

In that respect, the Roughies will have any titanic battle at Palisades Friday night as the host Pirates thoroughly handled defending district champion Pen Argyl, 46-21, to gain their second consecutive victory.

Palisades scored 20 points in the second quarter to take a 26-15 halftime lead and then took control of the game with a pair of third-quarter scores. Running back J.D. Donnelly scored three touchdowns and recorded 10 tackles as the Pirates beat Pen Argyl at their own smash-mouth football style.

"This has been a great start for us," said Donnelly. "It was a great win over Pen Argyl and we're looking forward to playing Catty."

"We know they will be a physical team," added Falzone, whose club beat Palisades, 40-0, last season. "They will probably look to play a ground-control game. We noticed that they had a lot of third-and-shorts against Pen Argyl.

"It will be another physical game with them and we know we'll have to control the ball. It will be another marquee matchup for us and we'll have to be ready."
