Girls look to make push

The Whitehall tennis team sits at 5-5 this season and they continue to try and make a push toward the postseason.

With a .500 mark, it's expected there are some things head coach Meredith Kester would like to seem improve.

"We're struggling with match play consistency," Kester said. "But have showed overall improvement since the beginning of the season."

However, there is also plenty to build on according to Kester. The coach said the number-three and four doubles teams have really stepped up this season, and through Tuesday have a combined record of 17-1.

Juniors Amanda Endy and Shadimon Navarro are the number-three team with a record of 9-1. The number-four team is made up of Celine Asmar and Emily Yenser and are 8-0 thus far.

"Our three and four doubles teams are the anchors of our team," Kester said. "They're showing great doubles skills throughout the season and play focused and inspired."

Kester added that Endy and Navarro have, "shown tremendous strides in their strategy and consistency," while Asmar and Yenser are, "strong competitors and are reliable to get the job done," adding the duo is, "smart on and off the court."

Kester also pointed to senior Emily Bachman as a strength on the team as what she describes as a utilit player. The coach said Bachman as stepped in at number-four doubles, number-two doubles as well as number-three singles when needed, showing great leadership skills at the same time.

"She's really stepped up to the plate," Kester said of Bachman. "She can work with any partner and plays to earn the point for the team."

At number-two singles, Laura Youwakim has amped up her mental game, according to Kester, and the results have been wins.

"She's using all her shots more effectively and pushing herself physically to stay in points longer," Kester said.

The team is in the middle of their second half of the season now with some key matchups ahead: Northampton, Central, Allen and Stroudsburg.

"How we execute over the next two weeks will decide the success of the season," Kester said. "I've told the girls that we may be out-skilled in matches, but we will outhustle."
