Cross country starts off strong with two wins

The Northampton cross country teams got off to good starts this season with boys and girls wins over Allen and Dieruff in a meet at Nazareth.

The boys beat the Huskies 16-45 and topped the Canaries 20-41. The girls won 15-50 over both teams.

"The girls ran very well for their first meet," head coach Dan Benner said.

The girls had six of the top-nine finishers in the race, which also included Nazareth runners. The Kids Joelle Perelli was the overall winner with a time of 20:13.

"She looked very strong in the second half of her race," Benner said.

The Kids took spots 3-5 with Haley Jackson (20:53, Lyndsey Gallagher (20:58) and Jessica Hendricks (22:00).

"Hayley and Lyndsey ran well together," Benner said. "Jessica had been battling some injuries but ran a tough race."

Tatiana Lopez was eighth in 22:55 and Tyleen Lopez was ninth at 22:56.

The boys were led by Chris Traugher who was the third overall finisher.

"He was way ahead of where he was last year for the first race of the season," Benner said.

The Kids placed two more in the top-10 with Kendrick Schell (19:05) taking seventh and Lucas Yost (19:21) coming in ninth.

"It was good to see them get out aggressive in their first race of the season," Benner added.

Benner also mentioned Andrew Martuscelli, who started the season under 20 minutes, coming in at 19:55 for 15th place.
