LOWER MACUNGIE TOWNSHIP BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS Willow Lane Elementary School walking project discussed

Thanks to the efforts of the school district, township and state police, the Willow Lane Elementary School's walking project is functioning well according to a report presented at the board meeting Sept. 5.

There are presently 12 crossing guards which includes Ron Miller, crossing guard captain. Statistics on number of walkers and children being driven to school are being accumulated. For example, on a rainy day, the number of cars increases. There was a count of 273 for one of those days with a 6-minute delay for the school start. This was within the first week of school.

The emergency sign has been received and will be installed. This is to alert motorists and pedestrians of potential fire department activity. There was a problem with the receipt of the flashing yellow school zone signs. The manufacturer informed the contractor these signs were shipped. When the signs were not received, the contractor asked for a tracking number, only to find out the information originally stated was not correct. The fact was the lights were not shipped and were not completely manufactured.

The lights are expected to be received and installed by Sept. 11.

Further discussion will occur about this delay and the incorrect information from the manufacturer. There was a contract between the township and the contractor for timely completion.

The state police are requesting a confirmation light on the back of these signs. This light would indicate the lights are flashing and would be seen on the rear of the sign. Presently, this is not part of the new signs. This will be investigated and brought back to the board for approval.

East Penn School Board Director Frances Fuller sent a letter of thanks to the commissioners for their support and assistance with this project.

There were some budget requests from the walkways committee. One request was made for immediate attention as the property is up for sale. This property is needed for hook-up to other parts. This will be discussed by the Public Works Committee but it was mentioned that completing this project by the township would set a precedent for others who have similar situations. It could also cause problems during the sale.

Lisa Ackerman was appointed to the Public Safety Commission, filling a vacancy. Her term will expire Dec. 31.

The first draft of the 2014 budget will be presented at the Sept. 19 board meeting. Budget workshops are scheduled for Oct. 1, 9 and the 29.
