Haberbosch nets late game-winner

The Parkland girls soccer team was looking for some scoring. The Trojans desperately wanted a goal. After a 0-0 draw at Nazareth on Tuesday, the first Lehigh Valley Conference home game was close to ending the same way.

With under three minutes to go in the second and final overtime, Rachel Medler ripped a shot from just outside the 18 that was blocked Northampton goalkeeper. Trojan senior Kayla Haberbosch charged the net and put away the winner to give Parkland (2-0-1) its first conference win and ended a nearly two-game scoreless streak.

"We always know to just keep pushing through everything and just always crash the goal and eventually something will happen," Haberbosch said. "In the first half no one really crashed the goal, and we knew the goalie had dropped some earlier. We know not to take any team for granted."

The Trojans lost 85 percent of their scoring in the seven starters that graduated from last year's team. It had been a struggle offensively of late since a 2-0 opening-game win against Governor Mifflin, but Parkland created its chances during regulation, out-shooting the Konkrete Kids 17-0.

"We lost a lot in our front," said head coach Al Haddad. "It's going to take us a little while to figure out what we do and we get the ball over midfield. We're lacking a little urgency and a thought process of where to go with the ball.

"We're doing a good job at possessing it, but its a little lack of recognition on where to go with that final pass to get a shot on goal."

One thing that has been a strength for the Trojans has been their defense. Haddad knew coming into the season that this would be an area that would help win games.

Junior goalkeeper Becky Webster, along with junior defenders McKenna Stengel, Sam Pavolko and Erica Bross and sophomore Jen Guetzlaff, have varsity experience and have helped Parkland to three shutouts in the first three games.

Haddad also mixes and matches with younger girls seeing time, and plays two other goalies, who he believes can start on any other team.

"I have three very good goalkeepers," said Haddad. "We took a large squad because we knew we were going to be young. So it's just a matter of getting girls some experience. We knew our defense was going to be tough. We proved it against Governor Mifflin and Nazareth, and now Northampton. We know our defense will keep us in every game."

Webster and Shannon Kriz split time in regulation and were not forced to make any saves. Sophomore Regan Allsop played in the two overtime periods and made two saves.

After almost 100 minutes of play, Parkland finally got its breakthrough when Haberbosch was at the right place at the right time off a Medler shot.

The Trojans now begin a week of four games, with three coming against LVC teams Whitehall, Liberty, and Dieruff before hosting Stroudsburg on Saturday.
