The Salisbury Police Department announced Sept. 5 the passing of former police K-9 "Zeus."
Zeus, then 9-years-old, was honored at an official retirement ceremony May 27, 2010.
His partner, handler and friend, Patrol Officer Jason Laky, who started the canine program in Salisbury in 2003, said Zeus was on active duty for seven years. "Years of patrol duty and jumping in and out of a patrol vehicle multiple times a shift take their toll on a patrol dog," Laky said.
Zeus was honored with an exceptional duty award and an honorable discharge from the police department at the ceremony at the township building.
Salisbury Police Chief Allen Stiles read the following citation regarding Zeus' service at the ceremony: "You have served the members of the Salisbury Township Police Department and the residents of Salisbury Township with distinction throughout your career from May 2003 to May 2010," Stiles said.
"You have aided in the apprehension of criminals, found illegal drugs and the money associated with trafficking. You have found lost children, protected your fellow officers from unruly crowds, kept drugs out of our schools and prevented crime by your presence and you did it all while exhibiting a gentle and friendly demeanor to the public at all times.
"You have provided countless public demonstrations of your skills to the delight of children and adults throughout the Lehigh County area. You have made many new friends for our department with your playful nature and your desire to please.
"Your outstanding performance to our community should be recognized. The officers of the Salisbury Township Police Department appreciate your service and your commitment to all of us. Congratulations on a job well done," Stiles concluded.

After retirement, Zeus lived with Laky.
