PHS vs. Easton is early-season showdown

Parkland played nearly flawless football last Friday night in a season-opening 50-8 win against Delaware Valley. But head coach Jim Morgans still sees some areas for improvement heading into the showdown with Lehigh Valley Conference power Easton this Friday night at Cottingham Stadium.

"The kids are aware, they know," said Morgans. "I mean we had an extra-point blocked, and if that happens against Easton it's going to cost you. And then we had to blow a timeout because we were going for two points and the kids thought we were going for one.

"It was things like that. Let's just say next week is going to be a little tougher."

There were many bright spots for the Trojans in their first game of the 2013 season. The offense, specifically the rushing attack of seniors Eli Redmond and Kareem Williams, blew apart the Warriors defense, and the scoreboard.

There was also the the play of both Parkland quarterbacks. Junior Nick Zambelli got the nod to start the first series and went 6-of-8 for 172 and a touchdown. Sophomore Devante Cross completed four of six for 40 yards and another score, all in the first half.

"They're very supportive of one another," Morgans said of his competing quarterbacks. "They both did a lot of good things [againt Delaware Valley] and there are also some things they can definitely improve on, which is only to be expected for first-year starters. We don't have any special packages for them. It's by nature of their athleticism and skill-sets that make the plays so different."

The stout defensive effort of Paul Barber, Naze and Omar Haddad, Preston Saylor, and Anthony Pagliaro to hold Del Val scoreless up until a meaningless fourth quarter touchdown, will have to be even stronger this Friday night against the Red Rovers.

Easton (1-0) will give the ball to tailback Shane Simpson early and often, so Parkland will have to be sure-handed tacklers and help each other out as a team.

These two teams met twice last year, splitting the meetings with the Red Rovers winning in the same week that year, and the Trojans winning when it mattered most, in the District subregional tournament.
